I’m Ian Smith from Indianapolis, Indiana. And I'm an IPS product.
How long you been teaching?
I've been teaching for nine years,
Nine years! What do you like most about it?
Inspiring young people. Helping them reach their fullest potential. Helping them get those aha moments.
For my students, just getting them to see a teacher that looks like them. That understands their background. Being able to relate to them. To connect with them outside of school with some of those life experiences that they go through. Being able to connect with them on that level so it gives them that, okay, he, he gets it.
How do you do that?
Just becoming vulnerable with them, like exposing myself to them, sharing my experiences with them and just being open with them.
Right now, there are more than 1,600 open teaching positions across Indiana.
But at Indianapolis Public Schools, they have a new program aimed at fixing the problem in their district. They're now recruiting and training new teachers all within a year.
